Experience, thoughtful leadership, integrity and trust are what I bring.
Experience, thoughtful leadership, integrity and trust are what I bring.
As the director representing the residents of Division 4, comprised of much of the City of Palm Springs, and currently serving as board president there are many issues of great importance to ensure the continued success of Desert Water Agency and the public that it serves. In my nearly four years on the board, I understand what it takes to make this happen. It is a responsibility that is not taken lightly, and one which I am honored to be able to do.
I have been a member of the Agency's board since my appointment in December 2020, after receiving no challengers in that year's general election. Since January 2023 I have led the board of directions as its president, and have also served as one of seven members of the Association of California Water Agency's Region 9 board, covering Riverside, San Bernardino and Imperial counties.
Since 2002, I have lived and worked in Palm Springs, embracing the desert environment with a deep commitment to water conservation. My relationship with the Agency began in 2005 when I co-founded the Desert Horticultural Society and served as its board president for 8 years. During that time, I worked with the Agency in support of programs to reduce water use in landscapes, and provide insight and advice on conservation programs within its service area.
Prior to beginning my own landscape design firm here in the desert, I worked as a member of the executive team for a major US retailer, as a business manager for a global telecommunications company, and as the CFO of an international business-to-business Internet firm. My move to the desert included a change in direction, pursuing a personal passion and making it a career.
I received my Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Stanford University and my Master of Arts in International Relations and Economics from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. Both programs allowed me to continue my academic pursuits while studying in Italy. Upon my move to the desert, I took classes at College of the Desert and UC Riverside Palm Desert as a part of a change of careers. I am also a graduate of the initial class of the Water Counts Academy, an education program supported by the six water agencies of the Coachella Valley.
In addition to my work with the Desert Horticultural Society, I previously served as a member and chair of the City of Palm Springs Architectural Advisory Committee, as a member of the Living Desert University Board and of Modernism Week’s Events Committee. I am currently on the board of directors of the Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter.
Please reach out to me at paulortega4dwa@gmail.com if you have questions or comments about my campaign and about the issues that are important to you regarding our most precious natural resource.
As state and federal regulations continue to emerge related to water safety and climate change, it is important to always find the balance between addressing the associated costs alongside the responsibility of delivering safe drinking water that is as affordable as possible.
I will continue to support the funding of conservation-focused programs that address the long-term sustainability of local water supplies, especially those programs targeted toward the economically disadvantage in our communities.
I have supported, and will continue to support, the lowering of the Agency's property tax rate when its reserves remain healthy.
